The University of Catania, the oldest in Sicily, & nbsp; it was founded in 1434 by King Alfonso the Magnanimous. The first seat of the University was in Piazza Duomo in a building near the Palazzo dei Chierici. In 1696, after the disastrous earthquake of 3 years earlier, with the contribution of the architects, Francesco and & nbsp; Antonino Battaglia and Giovanni Battista Vaccarini, the building of the University began to be built. The inner courtyard is designed as a cloister which originally had doors on all four sides of the building. The splendid main hall is frescoed, like the Vaccarini room of the Ursino Recupero library, by Giovan Battista Piparo. On the wall behind the seat intended for the Magnificent Rector there is a tapestry with the heraldic coat of arms of the Aragonese family.
