Churches

With entrance from via Teatro Greco, it is possible to visit the church of San Benedetto & nbsp; with adjoining convent, & nbsp; whose facade is on the scenic via dei Crociferi. The façade is decorated with sculptures by Giovan Battista Marino. The first building dates back to the Aragonese period, in 1355. It was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693 & nbsp; and it is still a cloistered monastery today. The church is accessed through the staircase of angels, a monumental entrance with polychrome marble and the eight statues of angels. The church whose vault was entirely frescoed by Giovanni Tuccari in the third decade of the 18th century with themes from the life of St. Blessed. Worthy of note are the wooden choir loft in the shape of the prow of a galleon and the eighteenth-century parlor where, in the past, the nuns met their relatives separated from them by the enclosed grates. The floor is medieval in terracotta and limestone. Here Zeffirelli shot some scenes of "the story of a blackcap". Under the monastery the remains of a Roman domus were found: through some transparent glass covers it is possible to see some parts of the external courtyard and the pantry.
