The fountain is named after the underground river that flows beneath Catania. Until the 1669 eruption, the river flowed in the open and fed the disappeared Lake Nicito. The branch that flows under the fountain is one of 3 that branches from the Benedictine convent toward the Pescheria market. The other two flow toward the Greek Roman theater and the Achillian baths. The fountain, made of Carrara marble, was created by Neapolitan sculptor Tito Angelini in 1867. The river is depicted as a young man holding a cornucopia from which the waters of the river flow out. From the basin at the young man's feet the water falls into the one below in a manner that the people of Catania call ?a linzolu?, drawing as it does a constantly moving drapery. On either side of the basin below are two tritons and in the center the heraldic coat of arms of Catania. Water from the fountain falls into the river below harnessed in a canal that flows to the sea.
