In the neighborhood of S. Berillio, the square is dedicated to the Magna Graecia poet Stesicorus. Within its perimeter, the square encloses 3 of Catania's most iconic monuments: the ruins of the great Roman amphitheater, the church of S. Biagio with the ?fornacella? of S. Agata, and the monument to Vincenzo Bellini. The present layout of the square is the result of a development that began in the early 18th century with the construction of the church of S. Biagio and the Tezzano palace, continued largely in the 19th century and ended in the second part of the 20th century with the gutting of the S. Berillio district that led to the opening of the major street axis of Corso Sicilia. The square is among the busiest in Catania also because of its proximity to the popular ?Fera 'o Luni?, in dialect Monday fair , the historic market open all week.
