Churches

The first foundation of the church, which stands in the square of the same name, dates back to the 14th century, when next to a small chapel the Franciscan Friars Minor created a small convent. In classical times the area was used for funerary purposes, and probably for this very reason in the first centuries of Christianity the chapel was built there. Over time the church was enriched with Renaissance sculptures and paintings with works by the likes of Antonello Gagini and Antonello De saliba. This church was also destroyed in the 1693 earthquake. It was rebuilt to the design of architect and presbyter Girolamo Palazzotto, who wanted to include Romanesque stylistic features in the austere façade, such as the dichromy of the pilasters, achieved by alternating black basalt with white stone, or such as the design of the trefoil window. Today the church is the seat of the parish of the district of the same name.
