Churches

The church of S. Giuliano is part of the monumental Baroque scenography in via dei Crociferi. The site on which it stands was originally occupied by a pagan temple from the Greco-Roman era. The Benedictine monastery of S. Giuliano originates in the 13th century and was destroyed in the disastrous earthquake of 1693. Rebuilt in the same place between 1741 and 1754 on a project by the architect Giuseppe Palazzotto, it is inspired by the Roman Baroque. The interior is a Greek cross with apsidal arms. The only hall is surmounted by an elliptical dome decorated with white and pure gold stucco. The airy convex façade has an elegant staircase at its base with a rich railing built in the nineteenth century. Inside, the design of the central altar is attributed to Giovanni Battista Vaccarini while the others, & nbsp; were redesigned by the architect Antonino Battaglia at the end of the eighteenth century. Highly recommended is the visit of the terraces from which you can enjoy an extraordinarily fascinating aerial view of the historic city. & Nbsp;
