It is the city's main square on which 3 streets converge: via Vittorio Emanuele, which crosses it, via Etnea and via Garibaldi. Overhanging this space are some of Catania's most significant monuments. First, the cathedral, the Diocesan Palace, home of the museum of the same name, connected via the Uzeda gateway to the Palazzo dei Chierici, the Palazzo degli Elefanti, seat of the city hall. And then in the center ?u Liotru?, the lava stone elephant symbol of the city, and on the southern side the Amenano fountain the city's underground river that emerges here and with its waters gushes among the fountain's sculptures. The Amenano River is the same one that flows through the remains of the Achillian baths. The frigidarium is still accessible by a staircase that descends 4 to 5 meters from the cathedral forecourt.
The most significant parts of the celebrations in honor of St. Agatha take place in the square. On February 5 when the martyrdom of the saint is commemorated, but also on August 17 when the return of the saint's remains from Constantinople is celebrated, the square is invaded by the faithful who follow the ferculum with the relics in procession from the cathedral into the square and then through the streets of the city.
