In the Civita district, inside the Bonajiuto palace, there is one of the few surviving buildings from the Byzantine era. A Greek cross with a dome and three apsed arms, today it is two meters underground compared to the street level. Belonging to the Bonajuto family since the 1400s, it was originally dedicated to S. Savior. It was the subject of a first restoration in the 18th century and in that period the French painter and traveler Jean Houel visited it. Having escaped the earthquakes and lava flows that followed in Catania, the chapel was restored in 1930 by Sebastiano Agati and Paolo Orsi. Today this space full of charm is home to cultural events, exhibitions and conferences.
