The original church destroyed in the earthquake of 1693, was rebuilt in 1729. It stands in Piazza Alberto di Savoia, on the site of an ancient necropolis where Stesicoro, an ancient Greek poet of the 6th century BC, is thought to have been buried. who lived for a long time in Catania. The facade, attributed to the architect Francesco Battaglia, is divided into three parts by two semi-columns in a giant order. At the top of the central body & nbsp; there is a statue of the Madonna del Carmine in a monumental niche. The sumptuous interior is a basilica with 3 naves. Adorned with 11 altars, the church is the third largest in Catania. Adjacent is the Carmelite convent which stands on an area of great archaeological interest. & nbsp; In this area was the primitive church of S. Leone, where popular tradition places the first burial of St. Agata, before it was translated into S. Agata la vetere. Of great value are the 14 stained glass windows made with an ancient medieval technique depicting Carmelite themes.
