Descrizione

Unpublished documents, but also texts, letters and collections useful in revealing the world of Verga the man and writer. One hundred years after the death of the greatest exponent of Verism, the City of Catania and the Sicilian Region have promoted the creation of a documentary exhibition, in the Ursino Castle, and the catalog "Giovanni Verga, quotidianità di un romanziere." The initiative highlighted significant stages in the author's life and the essential features of his writing, drawing largely on documents from the "Eredi Verga" fund, preserved in the Municipal Historical Archives, starting with marriage chapters, wills, court disputes, and correspondence with several voices.
The volume accompanying the exhibition, staged between November and December, was presented in the Vincenzo Bellini Library during a meeting moderated by Culture Director Paolo Di Caro. Speakers included Superintendent for Cultural and Environmental Heritage of Catania, Donatella Aprile; Professor Antonio Di Silvestro, professor of Philology of Italian Literature at the Department of Humanities at the University of Catania and curator of the catalog; film critic Franco La Magna; Carla Verga, the writer's heir; and actress Nunziata Blancata.
Superintendent Aprile expressed particular appreciation for the synergy of the entities that, by collaborating, produced the exhibition and catalog and, above all , stressed the importance of the presence of schools in the path of the Verga centenary.
Prof. Di Silvestro highlighted the profile of the Verga man, with his affections and weaknesses in the family and social context. ?To fully understand the personality of Giovanni Verga ? he also highlighted in the catalog - it is necessary to investigate the milieu constituted by the family, the source of atmospheres, suggestions and places present in his stories, as well as the multiple social relations that marked his "everyday life.""
The meeting was enlivened by the interpretation that Nunziata Blancato, of Fita Catania, rendered of some letters from the cholera period (1854) written by the writer's father, Giovanni Battista Verga Catalano.
Verga's thought through cinematography was sketched by film critic La Magna, starting with the silent film ?Tigre Reale?
Carla Verga praised the work of the children who approached the study and interpretation of the writer with a feeling of affection, ?just like a grandfather?
A representative of the Principe Umberto High School, Patrizia Perricelli, testified to the value of her experience as a guide for the exhibition at Castello Ursino.
